Easter Eggs

Easter eggs meaning

Paschal eggs are another name for Easter eggs.

The tradition of Easter eggs can be traced back to Mesopotamia in the early Christmas season, and it travelled to Europe and Serbia via churches. According to some historians, a European custom evolved in which white Christians were forbidden from eating eggs until Easter.

Easter eggs are used as a gift for Easter. The old tradition is to paint the chicken eggs.

In Christianity, eggs are a sign of fertility and rebirth. Easter eggs represent Jesus' empty tomb, from which he was resurrected. The easter egg was dyed red in commemoration of Christ's blood poured at his crucifixion.

Easter Eggs traditions

1.Colouring

In this tradition, eggs are boiled in natural substances like an onion peel, walnut, etc for achieving different colours. In orthodox churches, the eggs are coloured red to show christ's blood. Eggs were also coloured with artificial colours.

2. Lenten tradition

In this tradition, the households had to use all the eggs before lent began. Eggs were forbidden during lent or on any fasting days.

3. Patterning

Patterning is a very interesting Easter egg tradition. In this tradition when eggs are boiled with onion leaves or any other dyeing agent onion leaves can be wrapped on them before boiling to create leaf patterns. Or they can be covered with muslin or nylon cloth leaving patterns.

In Ukraine, Pysanky eggs are decorated using a wax-resist method.
